How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!



3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
